When a ladle, a metal dish with a sturdy handle, is plunged into the furnace and pulls a mass of molten glass up and out of the small door, it is like gathering from the surface of the sun and retrieving a puddle of light in your arms. It is a searing mass of curious material that seems to have come from another time and place. “The Sun” is a three-minute stop anima- tion video of glass ladled from the furnace into a round steel mold. Each image bleeds to the next giving the illusion you are staring literally into the sun, full of solar flares and hot spots the orbiting shape remains in flux. (2010)
